hacksaw ridge is the best war movie that I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a heck of a lot of war movies we all have they’re a Hollywood staple and interestingly hacksaw bridge is not the best war movie when it comes to visual effects it’s not the best war movie when it comes to cinematography it’s not the best war movie when it comes to the teaching of history other films in a far better job and each of those categories but what makes hacksaw bridge the best overall is it’s emotional truth just like with passion of the christ where Mel Gibson made me understand Christianity here with hacks are rich he made me understand the bravery of soldiers now let me clarify what i mean by understand because i’m sure some of you are like WTF grace already in the comments but what I mean is that before of course I knew about these things intellectually but that implies distance I like that something happened that something people did but well Gibson is able to do is able to put me in this situation and to make me truly understand something that beforehand was not only unimaginable but I didn’t even know that I didn’t truly get it i think the best way to describe it as like the matrix and that mel gibson is able to plug you in with that strong emotional truth for instance one of the best shots in this movie is when they’re standing right at the edge of hacks ridge where they have to go up the side of the of the cliff to cliff face and mel gibson pans up and he shows where they’re heading it with a heavy artillery from the Navy offshore and it’s just exploding and it’s just it looks like a painting like one of the paintings that you see of like old-time Wars museums as a new yorker i would put it in there with like the metropolitan museum of art and I’ve seen those paintings but here Mel Gibson made it come alive and he made me understand what it felt like to stand on the edge of that battlefield on the edge of hell and know that you have to move forward and to move forward it’s it’s it’s both intellectual enemy emotional like Mel Gibson can really get into the head of the individuals he’s depicting whether it be Jesus Christ or in this case some very brave young men i was just absolutely shocked how good this was an dat and I also think I’m sorry I’m gonna make sure I get this right so I’ve got my notes here Mel Gibson yes he is a master depicting violence and this is no exception this is some of the most violent depiction depictions of battlefield I’ve ever seen but mel gibson never does it gratuitous Lee and he never does it I know in a way that my god is meant to discuss you what Mel Gibson is trying to do is just to present to you the simple truth of what war is really like men tearing each other apart and that’s crucial not only in authentically depicting war but to contrast it with Desmond boss who says and it’s just so beautiful the way Mel Gibson construct it and I’m sure obviously it was beautiful in real life which is why this man is a decorated soldier but one guy wants to put a little bit of a piece of the world back together as it tears itself apart and the movie really does a good job of not only illustrating that the script but illustrating visually in the film itself also i want i also said that i’m in my notes that Desmond AUSA’s feeling that every single life is important in service marks on the scoreboard scoreboard was also really are inspiring because too often and war especially you know foot soldiers are just as cannon fodder particularly in some of the older wars so it’s just so great to see someone who doesn’t feel that way in the middle of the battlefield and doing what they can to make a difference it’s just we’ll just take your breath away and the movie isn’t perfect and not only did i say that the best visual effects and photography or the teaching of history but in the first third of the film it’s pretty clear that Gibson needs a bigger budget also try SE white and as hard as he might wish it Australia does not stand in for Virginia the foliage is a dead giveaway and also even though the light quality is off I mean it’s a very good substitution for when they find themselves I you know on that on the eastern front fighting against Japan that’s a good because it’s in the same part of the globe but it just it was hard for me to see that is America despite some very good performances now let’s move over to the performances because while Mel Gibson elevates this film with his visceral depiction of the humanity of war his cast ain’t too shabby either they really hold up their end of the bargain Vince Vaughn I have to say I thought he was miscast about always the only actor you know name actor from the United States I guess will still work with mel gibson but he’s really good here he’s funny he has a lot of good humor but he also has a stern matter of fact mr.

during that the battle sequences and I think he’s really an important ingredient here because his matter of fact miss and humor keeps the movie from getting too sappy he’s a good balance to andrew garfield character don’t want to talk about andrew garfield that asked for look bracing this is the first time that I’ve not only seen Luke Bracey do a good job have movie star potential so mel gibson did him a real favor here also the whole cast Hugo Weaving he does a good job is to really powerful moments as I Desmond AUSA’s father and teresa palmer really does a good job channeling Rachel McAdams and there are a whole slew of Australian actors that you’ll recognize from character and small roles here in the United States doing excellent job portraying Americans but the movie belongs to andrew garfield his performance is spectacular to behold he looks like he stepped out of the nineteen forties so often these days you know they’ll do a period piece and you know you have this like again its distance is this intellectual distance where it’s like oh yeah I’m depicting the nineteen forties but i feel that Andrew Garfield actually felt he was in the nineteen forties and so therefore you made me feel like he was in the 1940s it was amazing and very refreshing but even beyond him getting that the feeling of the time period right i would say that every single line glance and action was incredibly authentic his performance was that deep it just was really a thing of beauty to behold I also think that one of the most important things about his performance and film itself is that Desmond bosses faith is something that’s private and he’s not pushing his belief in Christianity on anybody else in the movie or watching the movie and that’s important because while people who are equally strong religious faith will relate to Desmond boss I think he’s also very relatable to anyone who just believe in anything I mean this isn’t a movie about Christianity per se i mean that’s Desmond bosses you know faith of choice but i think it’s really in the broader scheme of things just about our faith conviction and goodness in general which are the best parts of humanity for everyone no matter what religion you choose to believe it so I thought that was a really crucial part of the movie that Mel Gibson got right there is a really important tone and balance to strike and they do and so I think the axle ridge it’s a great movie and it does have its flaws so for that reason I feel that it’s best shot at getting uh some awards nominations it’s andrew garfield and that’s what I think I line station until I think they should really push during award season to get him a nomination and i have to say we haven’t seen all the other contenders yet but I think he might even be deserving of the win for Best Actor for his work here it was really that good finally they wrap the movie up with some interviews with the real Desmond boss and also the commanding officer that sam worthington plays in the film and those interviews were great because not only is a nice of course to see the real life people that you just spent two hours with which is so incredible but also their interviews kind of backup the movie that you just watch to make you realize that Mel Gibson didn’t balance that this these are true stories and he told you as the story as it was as Desmond das has told who of course was was up the one who’s in many cases you’ll see in the film the only one there you know in this it’s just don’t give too much away it’s just absolutely stunning and i have to say that in addition to this movie making you really appreciate veterans I mean you will never feel the same way about veterans again after watching this movie but also it shows you that someone is truly passionate about something and they’re coming from a good place even if you don’t agree with them or even if you don’t understand them you should maybe let it play out again i preface this has to be coming from a good place but maybe you should let it play out because that person and their beliefs just might surprise you wow what an amazing movie make sure you see it alright so if your snacks are rich i’d love to hear your thoughts down below be careful not to give away any spoilers without a spoiler warning because there are some really incredible surprises in the film and again i’m looking forward to continuing the discussion with you down below and you can check out some more videos right now.
